Clinical Dermatology
Our skin is a vital organ that plays many roles. Not only does it act as a protective barrier and sensory organ, but it is also involved in the regulation of fluid and electrolyte balances, conversion of precursor substances to their biologically active forms, and in temperature regulation. The skin provides protection from physical assaults, such as ultraviolet radiation, as well as immunologic threats, such as infections. It oftentimes serves as a window to the diagnosis of internal diseases by providing signs and clues to these underlying problems.
Healthy skin is an integral part of overall health, a fact that is increasingly appreciated with the unfortunate rise in the incidence of potentially fatal skin cancers, such as malignant melanoma, Merkel cell carcinoma, and squamous cell carcinoma.
